Abstract
We investigated the relationship between craving to drink, abstinence self-efficacy, depression and suicidal ideation, and to identify factors for suicidal ideation in alcohol dependence inpatients. The sample was 146 patients from a alcoholic hospital in suburban area and who agreed to participate in the study. Data were collected by staff nurses involved in direct patient care with the participants from May 1, to 15, 2010, and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, and hierarchic multiple linear regression with the SPSS/WIN 20.0 program. The mean score for the OCDS, AASES, CES-D, SSI were 2.45¡¾0.77, 3.16¡¾0.86, 2.61¡¾0.45, 2.28¡¾0.77 respectively. There were significant correlations between the OCDS and SSI (r=.37, r£¼.001), AASES and SSI (r=?.26, r£¼.001), CES-D and SSI (r=.22, r=.006). Craving to drink and abstinence self-efficacy accounted for 18.1% of variance in suicidal ideation. The results of this study indicates that alcohol dependence inpatients¡¯ suicidal ideation is related to craving to drink, abstinence self-efficacy, depression and that there is a need to develop programs which focus on craving to drink, abstinence self-efficacy, depression management. OCDS=Obsessive Compulsive Drinking Scale, AASES=Alcohol Abstinence Self-Efficacy Scale, CES-D=The Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale, SSI=Scale for Suicide Ideation.
